“Happiness is a by-product of something else, like overcoming difficult situations,” he said.

Harold Axley was enjoying a day on his motorcycle when another driver suddenly turned left in front of him. Harold lost his leg at the scene.

In the years that followed, he strove to get back to the activities he enjoyed prior to his accident.

“Maybe five years after the accident, I looked around and decided, ‘I made it,’’” he said.

He was aided in part by his pragmatic outlook on life. Harold said his friends would describe him as honest and, “willing to change my mind in the face of new evidence.”

“Happiness is a by-product of something else, like overcoming difficult situations,” he said.

Harold first came to Bulow Orthotic and Prosthetic Solutions after hearing about them from a previous orthotist. Since then, he’s made numerous accomplishments, including riding his Harley again, building a house, earning a business degree, shadow boxing, fishing, hunting, landscaping, staying in shape and playing with the dog.

“What does not kill us makes us stronger,” he said. “We don’t know what tomorrow brings. Things usually are what they can be with effort.”

In his spare time, Harold enjoys playing in the garage with his motorcycles, researching interesting things online, camping and playing guitar.
